Design, order and realize projects with Revit apps

BIM projects are often known for their long preparation time. But actually, it's by cleverly handling information in the model through handy apps for Revit that you can save a lot of time in all phases of the project - from design to order and maintenance.

Lightning fast design
You can already start saving time in the design phase. Make sure you work with correct, up-to-date BIM data and use the content that manufacturers make available online. For example, you can design and manage switching systems at lightning speed with the ABB Busch-Jaeger Switch Range Configurator for Revit, with guaranteed up-to-date product information. This way there’s no need to create families yourself anymore and you don't run the risk that the information in the model is not correct.

Order quickly from the model
Thanks to the new Rexel Wholesaler App for Revit (free downloadable from the MEP content store), you no longer needlessly spend time on a complicated ordering process. You can now order your products from the model with just a click. With the handy app you can easily import article numbers, stock information and gross price into the model. Thanks to the link with the Rexel product range, which consists of more than 250,000 products for construction, industry, utilities and retail, you can easily upload product data into the drawing.

Realization
Thanks to the direct link from the model to the order system, the right parts are delivered on location, which fully correspond to the modeled installation. Thanks to the information available in the model, technicians on location know exactly how to install the products and can find additional information about the products in the installation, which saves a lot of time.

Management and maintenance
Not only during construction, but also during management and maintenance, the BIM data saves time. For example, technicians can use their tablet or VR glasses to see in advance which products have been used and how they have been assembled. This means that they can go well-prepared and perform the right actions on location efficiently. Even when parts need to be replaced, they can see the stock status of these parts directly via the Rexel Wholesaler App.

Rexel Wholesaler App
With the handy apps for Revit like the Rexel Wholesaler app, you can make smart use of the available data during several project phases. Would you also like to boost your projects and realize them faster? Download the app now for free on store.mepcontent.com to use directly in your BIM projects.

BIM brings manufacturer and MEP engineer together

Spelsberg has been a regular content manufacturer at MEPcontent.com for a number of years. During the BIM LIVE Experience in Boxtel, Erwin Van Schooten, Managing Director at Spelsberg, explained how the role of the manufacturer has become increasingly important in the BIM process.

Spelsberg is a German manufacturer of plastic enclosures for the electro technical market and focused originally on German speaking countries. This is still an important market today, but exports now also play an important role.

Past and present

Erwin van Schooten, Managing Director at Spelsberg, explains how the role of the manufacturer has changed: "In the past, when the world was not yet digitalized, a MEP engineer had limited choice in different brands. He went to his wholesaler to buy his products. The wholesaler could only sell a limited number of brands. When an engineer had selected a wholesaler, this usually also determined his preference in brand and product.

Nowadays things are different, the MEP engineer is offered a lot of products from different brands and therefore a wide range of choice. However, he no longer has time to study all the product details of so many different brands; he simply wants to have a good product for the requested application. This creates a conflict: how does the engineer know which product is most suitable? Especially because he has no time to personally address, for example, 10 different suppliers of a type of product.

The solution to this problem lies in good communication of information. A representative still has a role to play in this, but the digital highway also offers many opportunities to engineers for making a choice. The more details of a product are available, the better the selection will be. BIM plays an important role in this and this role will only increase in the future.”

Data transfer

“When we look at where the manufacturer stands in the BIM process, there are still major steps to be taken," said Erwin Van Schooten, Managing Director at Spelsberg. “But how should we move forward? How do we come a step closer to the ultimate transfer of information?”

This is where MEPcontent comes in: the largest BIM library for MEP engineers, which offers up-to-date BIM content and productivity-enhancing Revit applications for the installation industry. On this platform, the manufacturer's products come together with the requirements of the engineer. Spelsberg is one of the hundreds of manufacturers that place their content on MEPcontent.com.

Reduce failure costs

MEPcontent demands a lot from the manufacturers. All product specifications must be communicated so that they can be displayed on MEPcontent.com. Why does Spelsberg go through so much effort to get all product specifications right on MEP content and what does Spelsberg want to achieve with it? Erwin explains: "The purchase of a product is only part of the total cost of ownership. Spelsberg wants to deliver a product at the end of the cycle that fully meets the wishes of the user and a product that is fully appreciated by the MEP engineer.

Spelsberg is convinced that the quality of the product and the installation improves when there is an insight into the costs of the total cycle, for example with regard to ease of installation and service costs. The purchase price of a product can be higher, but due to a reduction in costs, the total installation price at the end of the cycle can be cheaper. Thanks to all the displayed up-to-date product specifications on MEPcontent you can really reduce your failure costs!”

Supply of information

MEPcontent assists Spelsberg in disseminating all the information they provide to a product. But it is important that the manufacturer continues to supply the information. Spelsberg is ahead of other manufacturers in this process. There is a lot of demand for actual content, but this is not yet matched by the amount of content supplied by manufacturers. In the future, MEPcontent wants to create an even better collaboration between the manufacturer and the MEP engineer, because there will be constant demand for new and improved content.

How is content generated? From PIM to BIM

Insights into the content factory: how does the MEPcontent team process product from manufacturers into 3D content for use in BIM projects? Read this article or watch the webinar to discover how the content factory works.

The MEPcontent team collaborates closely with leading manufacturers to guarantee actual and useful content for BIM projects. In an efficient workflow, product data from the manufacturer is transformed from PIM data to BIM data.

The road to BIM starts with PIM
The content creation starts with PIM, which is the product information management system for manufacturers. This where product data is stored. The data in this system is the source for all of the content in our BIM library. Either by supplying the MEPcontent team with data sheets or technical documentation of actual products, manufacturers provide the input for generating 3D content representing real products.

Match to BIM standards
After the MEPcontent team receives the manufacturer data, the data is matched to local standards such as ETIM, VDI, COBie and NL-SfB, depending on the country the content is meant for. Additionally, the data is matched to the EMCS, to ensure content that is easy to use, lightweight and contains the right information that engineers need in their projects.

Recreate the object in 3D
From the geometric data supplied by the manufacturers, which includes information about for instance diameters, lengths and connection types, the MEPcontent team creates a standard family. From this family, a 3D object is automatically generated which can be used in BIM-projects. This object can be created in various file formats such as RFA, IFC, PLS or DWG.

Testing and publishing
After content creation, the content is thoroughly tested and reviewed by the MEPcontent team. When the content has passed the testing phase, it is published in the MEPcontent library and ready to use. The BIM files can now be accessed through www.mepcontent.com or via the MEPcontent browser, which engineers can access from within their design platforms. This way, engineers can design with actual 3D objects from leading manufacturers in their BIM projects, easy and for free.

Do you want to create BIM files for your products? Please contact our content team to find out more. Are you missing products on our platform? Let us know which manufacturers you miss by filling in this form, and we will contact the manufacturer.

Generic non-return valve added

A generic non-return valve is added in our library.

A non-return valve is fitted to ensure that a medium flows through a pipe in the right direction, where pressure conditions may otherwise cause reversed flow.
The flow through the non-return valve causes a relatively large pressure drop, which has to be taken into account when designing the system.

The generic non-return valve can be downloaded as RFA and DWG file.

What content is offered on MEPcontent?

In the construction industry the role of digital 3D content is getting more and more important, as content is used at the start of almost every construction project. If the content used in a project is not correct, this will impact the quality, the calculations and the eventual realization of the project. To ensure engineers work with high quality project content, MEPcontent offers more than 500,000 3D objects in different file types.

What content types are there?
The objects on MEPcontent are offered in different file types, namely IFC, DWG, RFA and PLS. RFA files can be used in Revit, DWG in AutoCAD and IFC is a platform-independent file type, which can be used to exchange information between different parties working on different design platforms. The PLS is a file type which is particularly useful in BIM projects. PLS stands for Product Line Sheet and is actually an Excel sheet with data that can be used as a source for generating BIM content, for example for apps. The Product Line Sheet is filled with parametric information about the geometrical model. It’s lightweight, fast and therefore easy to use in BIM-projects, while still providing a realistic representation of the product with the right connectors and information that is valuable to MEP engineers.

Quality guaranteed with EMCS
Regardless of the file type, the quality of the content is guaranteed by the EMCS: the European MEP Content Standard. This ensures that the data attached to 3D-content is correct and in line with the engineers expectations and needs. The EMCS helps the engineer and the manufacturer to see how the content is being built, what kind of information is attached to it, and how it can be used in different kinds of projects. It ensures content is compact, small and easy to use which makes it faster to use in large projects. The EMCS is also matched to various BIM standards such as ETIM and VDI, to ensure content complies to leading European BIM standards.

Ready to order
In addition to enriching content with technical data, such as technical manuals, the content is also equipped with manufacturer-specific trade and product data. So besides all the technical parameters, also deeplink URLs to the manufacturer website are added, or GTIN numbers and in some cases even a connection to wholesaler databases. This way, MEP engineers can access details from their preferred supplier directly from the BIM model. This makes it easy to order products and get prices directly from the model, already in the design stage. This is the real added value of BIM, as engineers can access all the information they need directly from within the model, and information is used efficiently throughout the entire project.
