10 BIM trends in the MEP industry in 2018

2018 promises to be an interesting year for BIM. New technologies will be introduced, trends from last year are now taking hold and increasingly more companies are benefiting from reduced failure costs and productive work processes thanks to BIM. For those who to raise BIM projects to a higher level, these are the 10 most significant trends to watch out for this year:

1. Modular construction & prefab
Reduce costs and accelerate the construction process: these are two major advantages of modular construction. Building elements are already prepared and assembled in the workshop before the construction commences. Prefab initially begins with prefab concrete walls and floors, however, increasingly more MEP elements are being prepared prefab. The Stabicad for Revit prefab module facilitates such a workflow. MEP engineers can now generate prefab drawings based on the information in the BIM model and incorporate the correct product information and instructions for the workshop. This means that components can be assembled quickly creating an efficient workflow from design to prefabrication and installation.

2. Internet of Things
Smart thermostats and intelligent ventilation systems have already been the standard in the MEP industry for some time now. The intervention of major technology giants like Apple, Google and Samsung in this market ensure that our home are becoming even more smarter. However, it is expected that the Internet of Things (IoT) is also going to change the work of installers and modelers. Take, for example, the advantages that IoT offers when it comes to releasing BIM data to prefab workshops, suppliers or modelers. Modeling and ordering is becoming a lot easier thanks to cloud apps like the ABB Switch Range Configurator or the Rexel Wholesale Connector. Thanks to up-to-date data, designing can be done directly using ready-to-order products that can be delivered directly to the building site. It may not yet be immediately apparent, but the Internet of Things is going to profoundly change transform the work installers.

3. Augmented/VR Reality
Last year, we already wrote about the emergence of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR and AR) in the MEP industry. Virtual Reality, which enables you to examine extensive 3D models through glasses like the Oculus Rift, is extremely suitable for giving project presentations to the client. Augmented Reality, which merges the reality with virtual images through, for example, Microsoft HoloLens, is very promising as a training tool or for conducting clash testing on site. Take, for example, the possibilities for remote management through a technician wearing AR glasses on site and an expert in the office. This may still be a pipe dream for many, but when products in construction projects are coupled with the correct data, anything is possible. The developments of this visual technology are also worth keeping an eye out for in 2018, because there are yet more great applications in the pipeline.

4. Order directly from the model
More and more installers are realizing that there is more to BIM than offering 3D insight. Enhancing BIM models with data makes a model even more valuable, provided it is used in a clever way. There are an increasing number of companies that benefit from cooperation between manufacturers, suppliers and BIM software developers. New installation engineering products are constantly becoming available for sale as BIM objects, including current product data such as article numbers and dimensions. Thanks to this information, products can be ordered directly from within the model. Examples of such applications are the MEPcontent Rexel Wholesaler App and the link between Stabicad for Revit and Syntess ERP software. A great advantage of such tools is that duplicating work is no longer necessary and the ordered items correspond 1-to-1 with the products used in the model.

5. Mobile cloud applications
The cloud collaboration trend, which is mainly reflected in the use of mobile cloud applications in construction, will continue in 2018. Real-time data from the construction and design process can be simultaneously viewed by different people at different locations. All that this requires is an Internet connection. The Trimble Connect app is a great example of such a platform where partners can collaborate in the cloud from the design phase right through to delivery. Engineers can gain access to the relevant and current information via the tablet, smartphone, PC and the Microsoft HoloLens. This way, BIM models can be easily shared with the building site and reporting from the building site reporting can be effected quickly to facilitate a productive collaboration.

6. BIM to the building site: 3D laser scans and drones
2018 will bring more possibilities than ever for enhancing BIM models with current information. For example, working with point cloud: a point cloud can be created by conducting a 3D laser scan at the building site. This scan contains all accurate 3D dimensions of the building site. This data can be used as a basis for the BIM model in, for example, Revit. This would be particularly useful for complex projects in which it is difficult, if not dangerous, to measure project components by hand. In combination with drones, which are increasingly being used for construction projects, this is promising technology for delivering accurate BIM models.

7. Pick & Mix or All-in-One?
More and more products can now be adapted to the user's personal requirements. We now see this trend continuing through to the MEP industry: modelers are free to choose the tools that they want to work with. For example, an engineer that, for instance, is mainly involved in installing valves, does not require an expensive software packet with all the trimmings. He/she can download apps to suit his/her tasks and can cancel his/her subscription when and if the work so demands. On the other hand, there is the introduction of all-in-one packages and Suites that offer lots of combined software functionality. Engineers therefore have a huge range to choose from giving them access to all tools. Two different models that both offer the user the advantage of a wider range and flexibility to choose which tools best suit their method of working.

8. BIM goes green
It is well known that BIM ensures improved chain cooperation and internal efficiency. But the sustainable advantages that BIM offers plays an ever increasing role. By taking materials and energy properties into account already during the design phase, buildings can be built more energy efficient. This has advantages both during the construction phase, whereby, thanks to BIM, prefab and modular constructions can be applied, and during the operational phase. In the latter phase, huge savings can be made on energy costs and CO2 emission by using the right product and material. Also interesting is the circular economy, an area in which companies like Royal BAM experiment; in the design phase simulating all of the dismantling of a building, to ensure that a building can be demolished or recycled with minimum effort and loss.

9. 3D printing
3D printing technology made huge progress in the construction sector last year. Using the technology, which has long been considered a gimmick for nerds, the first house was fully 3D printed in 2017. The technology has great potential for creating extremely accurate building elements in a relatively short time and with minimum material loss. Thanks to accurate digital product and project data (for example, in the form of 3D components on MEPcontent), 3D printing can be useful within a BIM process in a variety of ways. For example, for quickly making prototypes for sharing with construction partners or for manufacturing components and prefab material. This technology is going to develop much further and is certainly worth keeping an eye on.

10. 4D, 5D and 6D-BIM
At present, there are only a few installers who think beyond 3D-BIM. That, however, is going to change in 2018; the first companies are already progressing towards 4D, 5D and even 6D-BIM. In the case of 4D-BIM, are talking about the visual representation of the construction schedule. This, for example, can be achieved using the Autodesk application Navisworks. However, 5D-BIM (cost calculation) and 6D-BIM (life cycle management) will offer much added value for larger projects. 5D-BIM and 3D-BIM adds two properties to 3D-BIM: costs and materials. In addition to the standard design parameters, details such as geometrics, aesthetics and thermal and acoustic properties are now incorporated in a project. This allows engineers to see how a decision affects the costs of a design in an early stage. 6D-BIM primarily focuses on the long term whereby data for maintenance and sustainability will be added at an early stage. Thanks to such improvements in the area of collaboration and data usage, installers will also maximize the return on their investment in BIM.

Rolux exterior Wall System from Ubbink available on MEPcontent

A new generation of flue gas systems from Ubbink can now be downloaded for free from MEPcontent. Watch the video and see how easy it its to model the flue gas system in Revit.

Rolux exterior Wall System ensures a low recirculation of flue gases which minimalizes costs risks. Recirculation is a common issue with gas flue terminals where outgoing (wet) flue gasses get back into the system through the fresh air- intake. This can cause disoperation or even damage to the condensing boiler resulting in maintenance costs.

Due to its enhanced terminal top design, the Rolux system ensures a low circulation of flue gases, while still allowing sufficient air intake for optimal boiler performance.

LOD, lod or loi in BIM? This is how you deal with them

These terms are frequently encountered in BIM projects: level of development, level of detail and level of information. The terms have not been laid down in an act or standard, but have been devised as a means to help communication within a BIM project run more smoothly. In practice, however, it seems that the terms do, in fact, cause some confusion. To avoid any misunderstandings on the agreements that are made at the level of detail in the beginning phase of the project, it is important to understand what exactly the three terms mean.

Level of development [LOD]

The level of development comprises both the graphic representation of the family as well as the level of the information that is linked to the family. Level of development is often abbreviated to LOD and is often referred to in BIM-related documents such as the BIM protocol. The level of development is the most general term of the three and less useful for detailed agreements.

Level of detail [lod]

When we speak of the level of detail, we are only referring to the graphic representation of the family. A family with a low level of detail has, for example, a simple geometric shape such as a cube or a cylinder and will not contain any specified equipment. Unlike the level of development, the level of detail says nothing about the information that is linked to the family.

Level of information [loi]

Information plays a crucial role in an BIM project. The level of information is used to indicate the level of the information that is linked to the family. A family with an extremely high level of information comprises, for example, manufacturer-specific data sheets and a maintenance instruction.

Taking a LEAN approach to LOD

The three terms LOD, lod and loi are aids for making good agreements with the other parties in the project. Thinking beyond the level of development avoids data (graphic or informative) being added to the model that will not be used. For example, in a project that requires LOD500 (in relation to maintenance), it is quite conceivable to propose modeling the level of detail at a lower level than the level of information. It is important to describe in the BIM protocol what exactly falls under the various loi, lod and LOD levels. This makes it clear which information is really important, what is expected of each other and the collaboration can really begin.

BIM App for designing and placing Valves in Revit

Today, we add another app for MEP engineers, the MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Valves. A great stand-alone app for Revit which can also be combined with the MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Piping. Easily filter on manufacturer, diameter, valve category, or technical properties. Select and place valves in your Revit project and work directly with localized and up-to-date manufacturer specific products.

The MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Valves app will give you access to valve series from 6 leading manufacturers (Belimo, Econosto, Oventrop, TA, Victaulic and Watts Industries) and this number will increase in the future. Select valves based on pressure stage and have fittings and flanges added automatically. Content is optimized and localized by region including article number, GTIN, manufacturer data and category. Use the diameter from the pipes you use in your model and see what valves are available to fit with your piping system.

Why would you as a busy draftsmen, MEP engineer, designer or modeler care?

The app can save you a lot of time compared to other sophisticated modelling software. You only have to use the clear app interface to select and place valves in your Revit project without a dozen of buttons and options to choose from. The app can be combined with other MEPcontent apps such as the MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Piping, as well as Stabiplan's Export and Import Excel app.

How does it work?

Start drawing pipes from your favorite manufacturers like Georg Fischer, SANHA or Pegler Yorkshire. Add valves with this new app from the above mentioned six valve manufacturers. Export your project data from Revit into Excel, adjust the data, share it with purchasers or management (who perhaps do not have Revit) and import it back into Revit. A true time saving process!

In the free version of the Product Line Placer, you can select Oventrop valves. Both balancing valves and ball valves from Hydrocontrol and Optibal are made available in this version. The MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Valves can be downloaded and tried for free on store.mepcontent.com. You can also watch a short video on the store to see how the app works. 6 Common Issues Most Specialists Face When Designing Heating & Cooling Systems

Designing piping systems in Revit can be quite a hassle. We have been talking with quite some MEP engineers and designers over the last months and found out that there are common issues for all of you. Pain points we’ve heard from specialists like you:

1. I am spending a lot of time changing systems in Revit from generic content to manufacturer specific content like pipes and valves.

You have received a model with a generic piping system from your consulting engineer that you want to change to a system from your preferred supplier. This can prove to be very difficult. Content provided by manufacturers does not match your actual system, the correct fittings are not available or autorouting preferences are not set within Revit. Making a generic system work for your specific project can take hours.

The manufacturer specific piping content in our recently published Product Line Placer for Piping App for Revit and Product Line Placer for Valves App for Revit work seamlessly with plain Revit content. Changing from generic to manufacturer specific systems will be a matter of seconds instead of hours.

2. Changing from one manufacturer to another manufacturer’s system is hard.

Did you just design a piping system for a specific manufacturer, but now your contractor decides to change to another supplier? Fear not, you will not have to design your entire piping system again. The Product Line Placer for Piping App allows you to just select another manufacturer and change the entire piping system, including fittings and bends. Using the ‘apply types’ function, you can be sure the new piping system is equipped with the correct product and trade information such as article number and GTIN.

3. I am tired of working with the pre-defined (limited) Revit options and rigidity.

Revit is a comprehensive tool offering a lot of functionalities. Too many functionalities to really work for you perhaps? Creating your own Revit library for piping systems, including autorouting settings, means really a lot of work. And what if manufacturers decide to change important technical details? You will have to set up a new library all over again and update all your custom made products. The Product Line Placer for Piping will do all of this work for you, pre-configuring autorouting settings and to equip piping systems with the correct bends and fittings, linked to the cloud-based MEPcontent database. No fiddling with your piping systems settings needed anymore.

4. I am searching for working, actual family packs and other BIM content all over the internet (ideally fabrication ready families).

Wow, there are quite some manufacturers and BIM platforms out there offering content for your MEP systems. The big problem? For some reasons, they all have different standards when it comes to the level of detail, connectors, naming and size. We know it’s important for you to work with content that is light, compact, that works for your entire project, but still has the right data attached to it. That is why we made sure our content is (manufacturer) data based. In this way, your systems will always be flexible and not have enormous, unnecessary levels of details. Still, you will have the right connectors, article numbers and deep links available within your project. Also, we made sure we added all relevant manufacturers to the Apps so you no longer have to go through endless hoops to download a single connector from a website you might not know very well. Are you missing a manufacturer? Let us know and we’ll try to add it to our app as well.

5. I am facing issues connecting piping systems with other equipment such as valves and pumps.

Having a decent piping system is one, but obviously, you have to add valves, pumps to it and connect it to existing systems as well. Finding or even creating correct fittings, connectors, valves, and pumps is a time-consuming job. But hey, we’ve got you covered here as well. Stop using content that you have to edit or customize yourself, and start using our content for valves and pumps which work seamlessly together with the piping app. Designing complete MEP systems from now on will be a piece of cake.

6. I am finding bad content online, forcing me to create my own content.

There is only one way to solve this. Work with a content platform you can trust. Such as MEPcontent. And when you miss content you often work with, we can talk to the manufacturer (we have over 290 manufacturers we cooperate with on a frequent basis) and use your case (and that of the 30k other MEP engineers, designers and modelers using MEPcontent) to convince them to have their products BIM ready and available to download for free from MEPcontent. We keep the content up-to-date through our cloud services and content update sessions with manufacturers. The great thing about the apps is that they can do the downloading for you! So you only have to focus on your project and the deadlines to be met.

Revit apps: what are they?

Revit plugin, Revit extension, Revit add-in, Revit add-on and Revit apps, what are they? After a quick Google search I could not find a clear page to explain it to me.

Marketing is a great field to be working in. But at the same time it can be difficult when it comes to correct and uniform naming and branding or categorization.

Also if you look at other synonyms like Revit applications, Revit plug-ins, there is no answer on the question: What is it? For those designers, (MEP) engineers, installers and draftsmen out there working with Revit and want to know what it is, I have the answer for you on this page.

What is it?
It comes down to this: a great piece of additional software on top of Revit.

Software designed with functionalities (and often unique BIM data access) you cannot find in Revit.

Why would you need it?
To complete a certain specialized workflow (like drawing piping systems with manufacturer specific content, ideally the content from manufacturers you work with) or do something which cannot be done in Revit alone such as configuring switch ranges if you are an electrician working in Revit.

Here at MEPcontent, we call them apps. Because we see them as applications on top of Revit and would like to keep things short and simple. Therefore apps (a shortcut term for applications). But whatever you want to call it, it comes down to be something on top of Revit. More specified, more localized, more customized to help you to get the job done, faster.

Where to get it?
If you are a MEP specialist, you can go to store.mepcontent.com to download our free or paid apps depending on the content you need. Guaranteed by our developers (based on 28 years of experience in MEP) to solve issues you face on a daily base. And checked by the marketing or customer success team (by email and phone calls) for relevance. By contacting real-life users globally to ask for feedback, additional content, or anything users might be missing.

By the way, the number of apps is expanding every month, so please make sure you check store.mepcontent.com often and download the (free) apps you need.

If you want to work with a more advanced app with access to content from up to 7 piping manufacturers, you can download the paid version of the MEPcontent Product Line Placer for Piping here.

Please tell us if you have any questions or when you have feedback about the apps. Because no matter how you call them or how we call them, they should work great nevertheless and we are here to make sure they do.
